Why Is Your Pool Losing Water So Fast?
If you’ve noticed your pool water level dropping faster than expected, you’re not imagining things — evaporation is likely the culprit. While some water loss is normal, hot weather can dramatically speed up the process, especially when paired with dry, low-humidity conditions.
Here’s how it works: when temperatures rise, water molecules at the pool’s surface gain energy and turn into vapor. But the real kicker? Dry air. The less moisture there is in the atmosphere — the lower the humidity — the more readily your pool water evaporates. In arid climates or during intense heatwaves, this effect becomes even more pronounced.
Believe it or not, a typical residential pool can lose over a quarter inch of water per day due to evaporation alone — and that number can double in hot, windy, and dry conditions.
Other factors also play a role. Wind increases evaporation by constantly replacing the moist air just above the pool surface with drier air, pulling more water into the atmosphere. Similarly, nighttime cooling can create a temperature differential that enhances daytime loss. Even pool usage — like splashing or frequent filter backwashing — can contribute, but true rapid loss due to climate is mostly about heat and humidity (or lack thereof).
Before assuming a leak, try the simple “bucket test”: fill a plastic bucket with water, place it on the pool step, mark both the bucket level and the pool water level, and wait 24–48 hours (without running the pump). If both levels drop similarly, evaporation is the likely cause.
While you can’t stop the weather, minimizing evaporation is possible. Using a pool cover when the water is unused is the single most effective step. It acts as a barrier, trapping moisture and reducing heat loss — saving water, energy, and your time.
