Why Pyrex Glass Isn’t Recyclable

You might think that all glass is recyclable, but that’s not quite true—especially when it comes to Pyrex. Despite looking like the glass bottles and jars you toss in the recycling bin, Pyrex shouldn’t go in with the rest. The reason? It’s made from borosilicate glass, a special type designed to withstand high temperatures and sudden changes in heat—perfect for baking dishes, but problematic for recycling centers.

Regular glass containers, like those for soda or jam, melt at a lower temperature during the recycling process. Pyrex, on the other hand, requires much higher heat to melt. When it ends up in a batch of recyclable glass, it doesn’t fully liquefy at standard processing temperatures. Instead, it can form stubborn chunks that contaminate the entire batch.

This contamination can weaken newly manufactured glass products, leading to defects or even safety issues. Recycling facilities sort materials carefully, but even a single Pyrex dish can cause problems downstream. That’s why it’s best to keep it out of the bin entirely.

So what should you do with old Pyrex? If it’s still in good shape, consider donating or repurposing it. If it’s broken or worn out, your safest bet is the trash—unfortunately, there’s no widespread recycling option for it yet. Some communities may offer special drop-off programs for kitchenware, but they’re rare.
