Can a Pseudoaneurysm Heal on Its Own?
When doctors need to access blood vessels—especially during heart procedures like angiograms—they often insert a catheter through an artery, typically in the groin. This small puncture, while routine, can sometimes lead to a complication called a pseudoaneurysm. Unlike a true aneurysm, which involves all layers of the arterial wall, a pseudoaneurysm occurs when blood leaks out but is contained by surrounding tissue, forming a kind of false sac.
The good news? Some pseudoaneurysms do heal on their own. In many cases, especially if the leak is small, the body can naturally seal the hole over time. This process usually takes days to weeks and is more likely in patients who aren't on medications that interfere with clotting. However, healing isn't guaranteed—and certain factors increase the risk of complications.
One major factor is the use of blood thinners. People on anticoagulant medications, such as warfarin or newer agents like apixaban, are more prone to developing pseudoaneurysms because their blood doesn’t clot as efficiently. In these cases, the body may struggle to seal the leak, making medical intervention more likely.
When a pseudoaneurysm doesn't resolve independently, doctors may take action—such as ultrasound-guided compression, a thrombin injection, or even a minimally invasive procedure. Symptoms like increasing pain, swelling, or a pulsating lump near the procedure site should never be ignored.
While many pseudoaneurysms are harmless and self-limiting, monitoring is key. With proper care, most heal without lasting issues—but early detection makes all the difference.
