Can Blood Tests Detect Mesothelioma?
For individuals with a history of asbestos exposure, one of the most pressing questions is whether mesothelioma can be detected through routine blood work. While there isn't a standard blood test for mesothelioma available in most clinics just yet, promising advancements are being made.
Currently, doctors cannot diagnose mesothelioma solely from a blood test. However, they can identify certain biomarkers—proteins or substances in the blood—that may signal the presence of the disease. For example, tests measuring levels of soluble mesothelin-related peptides (SMRPs) or fibulin-3 have shown potential in detecting mesothelioma earlier, especially when combined with imaging scans and patient history.
