When you heat a room, you're raising the air temperature. Warmer air has a greater capacity to hold water vapor than cold air. So, even if the actual amount of moisture in the room stays the same, the relative humidity—which measures how saturated the air is compared to its maximum capacity—drops as the temperature climbs.
Imagine a sponge: cold air is like a small sponge that gets full quickly, while warm air is a much larger sponge that can absorb more. When you heat the room, you're effectively stretching that sponge, making it less saturated—even though you haven’t removed any water.
This is why winter months often bring complaints of dry skin, itchy throats, and static electricity—especially in homes with forced-air heating systems. The outdoor air is already cold and dry, and once warmed indoors, its relative humidity plummets. For example, air at 0°C and 70% relative humidity can jump to over 20°C indoors but drop to just 20–30% relative humidity—well below the ideal range of 40–60% for comfort and health.
