How Salt Can Help Dry a Wet Carpet
Discovered a spill on your carpet? Before panic sets in, consider a simple household staple: salt. Contrary to what you might think, salt isn’t just for seasoning—it can actually help pull moisture from a damp carpet and reduce the risk of mould.
Sprinkle a generous layer of table salt over the wet area. The fine grains work like tiny sponges, drawing out moisture through natural absorption. This method is especially effective for fresh spills that haven’t soaked too deeply. The salt dissolves slightly in the water, staying in place and continuing to wick moisture from the fibres.
Leave the salt to work for a few hours—overnight is even better if possible. Once it’s had time to do its job, vacuum the area thoroughly. You’ll likely notice the carpet feels significantly drier, and the salt may even help neutralize minor odours.
While salt won’t replace professional cleaning for major floods, it’s a smart first step for smaller accidents. It’s cheap, readily available, and can buy you time before a deeper clean. Just keep in mind that heavily saturated areas may still need airflow or a fan to fully dry. The key is acting fast—salt helps, but speed is your real ally against mould and lingering dampness.
So next time you knock over a glass of water or catch a pet mid-accident, reach for the salt shaker before the towels. It might just save your carpet—and your peace of mind.
