Yes, water can still evaporate in a cold room—just more slowly. Evaporation doesn't require boiling; it happens when individual water molecules at the surface gain enough energy to escape into the air as vapor. Even in colder temperatures, some molecules will have sufficient energy to make the jump from liquid to gas, especially if the air isn't saturated with moisture.

Temperature plays a big role in how quickly this happens. In warmer conditions, water molecules move faster on average, increasing the chance that enough of them will break free to sustain rapid evaporation. In a cold room, molecular motion slows, so fewer molecules have the necessary energy to evaporate at any given moment. That’s why a puddle might linger for days in a chilly basement but disappear quickly on a sunny, warm afternoon.

Other factors also influence evaporation in cold spaces. Airflow and humidity are key. A drafty, dry room—even if cold—can allow evaporation to proceed more steadily than in a warm, humid, and still environment. Think of laundry hung indoors in winter: clothes eventually dry, especially near a heater or in a well-ventilated room, even though the overall temperature is low.

So while cold temperatures slow the process, they don’t stop it completely. Evaporation is a constant, quiet process that occurs across a wide range of conditions.
