What Space Actually Feels Like
If you were to step outside a spacecraft without a protective suit, temperature might be the least of your immediate concerns. While popular culture often portrays space as an instant deep-freeze, the physical reality is far more complex due to how heat behaves in a vacuum.
Because space contains no atmosphere, there is no air to carry heat away from your body through conduction or convection. Heat can only escape through thermal radiation, which is a surprisingly slow process. Far away from any heat source, you would eventually freeze, but it would take time rather than happening in a flash.
Positioning makes all the difference. If you stepped outside the International Space Station while directly facing the sun, you wouldn't feel cold at all. Instead, exposed surfaces would experience scorching heat reaching over 120°C (250°F)—a temperature hot enough to cause severe burns instantly. The moment you drift into Earth's shadow, however, the temperature drops dramatically toward -150°C (-240°F).
An unprotected human wouldn't turn into an ice cube right away. You would feel intense, painful radiation heat on the side facing the sun while gradually losing heat on the shaded side, making space feel simultaneously roasting hot and bitterly cold.
