Is Evaporation a Physical Change?
When you leave a puddle in the sun or watch a pot of water simmer on the stove, you are witnessing one of nature's most common transformations. Evaporation is entirely a physical change, meaning it alters how matter looks and behaves without changing what it is made of at a microscopic level.
To understand why, think about what is happening to the water itself. When liquid water absorbs heat energy, its molecules start moving faster until they break free into the air, transforming into an invisible gas called water vapor. Even though the water has shifted from a liquid state to a gaseous state, its chemical identity remains completely untouched. It is still made up of molecules containing two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom ($H_2O$).
Because no new chemical substances are created during this process, the change is easily reversible. If that water vapor cools down high in the atmosphere, it condenses back into liquid water droplets, forming clouds and eventually falling back to earth as rain. Nothing about the fundamental building blocks of the water has been altered permanently.
