Tuckman's Stages of Group Development
Every team undergoes a natural journey of growth and evolution before reaching its full potential. Developed by Bruce Tuckman, this classic model breaks down team development into five distinct phases: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning.
The journey begins with Forming, where members first come together. In this stage, individuals are polite, cautious, and focused on orientation. As people begin to share ideas and push boundaries, tension and friction naturally arise, leading to the Storming phase. While challenging, this friction is vital for hashing out differences and clarifying individual roles.
Once differences are worked through, the team enters the Norming stage. Trust is established, cohesion grows, and members agree on shared norms and working styles. This paves the way for Performing, where the team achieves high maturity and autonomy, working smoothly together to crush their goals.
Finally, when the project wraps up or the group's purpose is fulfilled, the team reaches Adjourning. This closing chapter involves reviewing achievements, celebrating milestones, and gracefully bringing the group experience to a close.
