Understanding Sound Levels

When measuring sound, 0 decibels represents the absolute threshold of human hearing—the softest sound a person with normal hearing can detect in a quiet environment. It is certainly not considered loud at all.

However, when discussing everyday noise levels and potential hearing damage, experts look much higher up the scale. A sound level around 70 or 75 decibels is generally considered moderate, well under the threshold of 85 dB, which is widely recognized as the point where prolonged exposure can start becoming damaging to human hearing.
