The Swiss Franc (CHF) is widely regarded as a global benchmark for currency security. The Swiss National Bank’s current (ninth) banknote series utilizes a unique three-layer substrate (Durasafe) and incorporates complex, high-tech security features that make counterfeiting exceptionally difficult.

Key anti-counterfeiting elements built into Swiss banknotes include:

  • The Shimmering Globe: A central globe design that displays a moving colored arc when tilted from left to right, with colors shifting as the note is tilted backward and forward.

  • Complex Security Strips: Holographic strips featuring micro-text, moving numbers, and maps or regional details of Switzerland that change appearance under motion.

  • Touch and Feel (Intaglio Printing): Raised printing on the main motifs (such as the hands and denomination numbers) as well as distinct tactile lines along the edges for the visually impaired. Rubbing these areas on a blank sheet of paper will leave distinct color traces.

  • Perforations and Watermarks: High-precision micro-perforations (Microperf) forming the Swiss cross, alongside dual watermarks (the Swiss flag and a globe) visible when held up to the light.

  • Ultraviolet and Infrared Properties: Hidden elements, fibers, and specific graphics that only illuminate or change under UV and infrared examination.
