This historical episode, commonly referred to in Islamic history and tradition as the Incident of the Slander (Hadith al-Ifk), is a well-documented event involving Aisha bint Abi Bakr, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, and Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal.
According to traditional accounts found in Sunni Hadith collections (such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) and historical texts:
The Incident: During a military expedition (the Expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq), Aisha accidentally became separated from the main caravan after searching for a lost necklace. Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal, a companion who was traveling behind the army to look for dropped belongings, found her alone the next morning and helped her rejoin the camp.
The Rumor: Certain individuals, notably led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, spread malicious rumors questioning Aisha's character based on this event.
The Resolution: Islamic tradition states that the rumors were entirely false. The situation caused immense distress within the early Muslim community until verses of the Quran (Surah An-Nur, verses 11–20) were revealed, declaring Aisha's innocence and establishing strict legal requirements for proving accusations of unchastity.
