Are Stromatolites Bacteria?

Technically, stromatolites aren’t bacteria themselves—but they’re built by them. These layered rock formations are the work of ancient microorganisms, primarily cyanobacteria, which thrived in shallow waters billions of years ago. Over time, these microbes trapped sediment and secreted sticky substances that caught particles, forming thin layers that eventually stacked into dome-shaped structures we now call stromatolites.

While they look like ordinary rocks, stromatolites are some of the most significant fossils on Earth. Some date back more than three billion years, making them the oldest known evidence of life. By studying them, scientists gain insight into the early conditions of our planet and the evolution of life long before complex organisms existed.

Cyanobacteria didn’t just build stromatolites—they helped transform Earth’s atmosphere. Through photosynthesis, they began pumping oxygen into the air, slowly setting the stage for more complex life forms to evolve. This “great oxygenation event” was a turning point in the planet’s history, all thanks to tiny, ancient microbes.

Even today, living stromatolites can be found in a few isolated places, like Shark Bay in Australia. These modern versions grow incredibly slowly, often just a fraction of a millimeter per year, reminding us that some of Earth’s most impactful processes unfold over eons.

So while stromatolites aren’t bacteria, they are built by them—a testament to the quiet, persistent power of the smallest life forms to shape an entire planet.
