Understanding Type 6 Plastic: The Hidden Life of Polystyrene

When you grab a takeout coffee in a foam cup or unwrap a new electronic device packed in molded plastic, you're likely handling type 6 plastic—better known as polystyrene, or PS. Identified by the number "6" inside the recycling triangle, often accompanied by the letters "PS," this material is everywhere, yet rarely thought about.

Polystyrene comes in two main forms: rigid and foam. The foam version—commonly referred to by the brand name Styrofoam—is lightweight and insulating, making it ideal for disposable food containers, coffee cups, and packaging materials. The rigid form shows up in items like plastic cutlery, CD cases, and clear food storage boxes. While convenient, it’s not always practical when it comes to disposal.

Here’s the catch: despite the recycling symbol, most polystyrene isn’t recycled. It’s bulky, easily contaminated, and many municipal recycling programs don’t accept it. Foam, in particular, breaks apart easily, becoming a persistent pollutant in the environment. Once littered, it crumbles into tiny pieces that can harm wildlife and linger for decades.

What’s more, concerns go beyond just litter. When heated, polystyrene can release harmful chemicals, raising health questions—especially when used with hot food or liquids. Some regions have already banned foam food containers for these reasons.

Still, because of its low cost and versatility, polystyrene remains widely used. The best move? Avoid single-use versions whenever possible. Opt for reusable containers and utensils instead. Awareness starts with recognizing that little "6"—and understanding what it really means.
