Subtle Signs Your Arteries Might Be Clogged

Many people don’t realize their arteries are narrowing until a serious event occurs. But often, the body sends warnings long before that point. One of the earliest and most overlooked signs? Shortness of breath during everyday activities that used to feel easy.

When plaque builds up in the arteries—especially those supplying the heart—blood flow becomes restricted. As Dr. Joshi explains, “When arteries are clogged, the heart has to work harder to pump blood. This may make you feel out of breath much sooner than you used to.” You might notice it walking up stairs, doing light housework, or even just getting dressed.

This breathlessness doesn’t always come with chest pain. In fact, some people experience it in isolation, especially women and older adults. That’s one reason symptoms are often dismissed as normal aging or poor fitness. But when your breathing feels off without a clear cause, it’s worth paying attention.

The heart struggles silently when it’s under strain. Over time, if the blockage isn’t addressed, this extra effort can weaken the heart muscle or trigger more obvious symptoms like chest tightness or fatigue. But catching it early—through awareness and proper medical evaluation—can make all the difference.

If you’ve recently noticed you’re huffing and puffing more than usual, don’t brush it off. It could be your heart quietly asking for help. Talking to your doctor, especially if you have risk factors like high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history, could uncover a problem before it becomes critical.

Listen to your body. Sometimes, the quietest symptoms are the loudest warnings.
