It's a question many users are asking: can someone else see what you search or ask in ChatGPT? The short answer is—yes, but only under certain conditions.

By default, your conversations with ChatGPT are private. OpenAI states that your chat history is not shared with others unless you explicitly choose to do so. However, there’s a crucial detail many overlook: shared links are not private.

If you generate a public link to a conversation—whether to share a helpful response, a creative idea, or a complex solution—that link becomes accessible to anyone with the URL. Even more importantly, those shared conversations can be indexed by Google. That means months or even years later, someone could type a similar query into Google and land directly on your shared ChatGPT exchange.

This doesn’t mean all your prompts are suddenly public. Only the ones you’ve actively shared through public links are at risk. Private chats, especially if you’ve disabled chat history, remain between you and the service.

Still, it’s a good reminder to think twice before sharing. Would you be comfortable with your question appearing in a Google search result? Could it reveal sensitive information, even indirectly? The content you share—even in AI conversations—can become part of the public web.
