Can Inflammation Hide From Blood Tests?
When you are dealing with chronic pain, stiffness, or fatigue, getting answers is a priority. Naturally, doctors often start with blood work to look for signs of inflammation. However, it can be deeply frustrating when your symptoms are real and severe, yet your lab results come back completely normal.
The short answer is yes, you can have active inflammation that does not show up on standard blood tests. This situation is more common than many people realize and is frequently referred to in medicine as seronegative.
In a seronegative condition, typical antibodies and inflammatory markers—such as C-reactive protein (CRP) or the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)—are absent from the blood. Despite this, the person may experience classic symptoms of an inflammatory disease. Some well-known examples include seronegative rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
If your blood work is clear but you still feel unwell, it does not mean your symptoms are imagined. Diagnosis often relies heavily on a careful physical examination, your medical history, imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs, and listening closely to how your body feels.
