Do Bacteria Have Minds?

Strictly speaking, bacteria don’t have minds—no thoughts, no consciousness, no sense of self. But that doesn’t mean they’re simple automatons. In fact, recent research suggests that bacterial colonies behave in surprisingly sophisticated ways, almost like a rudimentary network of communication.
