CBT or Theory First? Here’s How to Decide

When starting out on your motorcycle journey, one of the first questions many new riders ask is: should I do my CBT or theory test first? The good news is, the DVSA gives you the flexibility to choose. There’s no set order—you’re free to take the theory test before or after completing your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

That said, most learners opt to do their CBT first—and for solid reasons. Getting on a bike and riding under the guidance of an approved instructor helps build real-world confidence. You’ll learn the basics of handling, braking, and road awareness in a low-pressure environment. That early experience often makes the theory test feel more relevant and easier to grasp, since you’ve already spent time on the road.

On the other hand, some riders prefer to tackle the theory test early. Studying the Highway Code, understanding road signs, and learning about hazard awareness before riding can lay a strong foundation. It’s a more classroom-first approach, which suits certain learning styles.

Ultimately, it comes down to what works best for you. If you’re eager to get on a bike and learn by doing, starting with CBT makes sense. If you like to understand the rules before getting behind the handlebars, go for theory first.

Either way, remember that both steps are essential on your path to earning a full motorcycle licence. One builds your practical skills, the other sharpens your decision-making. Together, they prepare you for safer, smarter riding. So take them in the order that feels right—there’s no single correct path, just the one that suits your pace and confidence.
