Understanding Military Time

Military time is a precise 24-hour clock system used by the armed forces, emergency services, and aviation to avoid any confusion between a.m. and p.m. Instead of resetting after 12:00 noon, the clock simply keeps counting up to 2400.

Reading and pronouncing this format is straightforward once you know the pattern. For morning hours under 10:00 a.m., you include a leading zero and pronounce it clearly. For example, 0100 (1:00 a.m.) is spoken as “zero-one hundred” or “zero-one hundred hours”. If minutes are included, such as 0230 (2:30 a.m.), you say each digit or block naturally as “zero-two-thirty”.

As the day progresses past the morning, times from 1000 through 2400 drop the leading zero. For instance, 1000 (10:00 a.m.) becomes “ten-hundred”. By the time the afternoon and evening roll around, 1300 is 1:00 p.m. and 2200 is 10:00 p.m., ensuring absolute clarity around the clock.
