Will We Ever Run Out of Domain Names?

It’s a question that pops up often: with millions of websites online, are we running out of domain names? The short answer is no — not anytime soon, and likely never. While it might feel like every catchy .com name is already taken, the domain space is far more expansive than just that single extension.

The .com domain, introduced in 1985, became the gold standard of the internet. As a result, desirable short and simple names have long been snapped up. But the internet has evolved. Today, a wide range of new top-level domains (TLDs) — like .tech, .store, .app, and even .nyc or .guru — have opened up creative possibilities for businesses and individuals.

Since 2012, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved hundreds of new TLDs. This expansion means that even if your ideal name is taken in .com, it might still be available under a more specific or modern extension. These new domains not only increase availability but also help better define a website’s purpose or identity.

Technically, the number of possible domain combinations is nearly infinite. Even if we focus only on alphanumeric combinations, the pool is vast. Plus, domain registries can create new extensions as needed, making scarcity a non-issue in practice.

So while grabbing a one-word .com might feel like winning the lottery, the reality is that the digital real estate is still wide open. Whether you're launching a startup or a personal blog, there’s almost certainly a domain out there that fits — you just might need to think beyond .com.
