What to Expect After a Colonoscopy
It’s a common question: do you sleep all day after a colonoscopy? While you won’t need to stay in bed until bedtime, it’s a good idea to take things slow. The truth is, most people feel drowsy after the procedure due to the sedation used during the exam.
You’re not alone if you feel like napping. In fact, many patients are advised to go home, eat a light meal, and rest for several hours. The sedatives wear off gradually, and your reflexes and judgment may still be impaired even if you feel awake. That’s why doctors recommend staying home and avoiding any strenuous activity immediately afterward. Most people start feeling more alert within four to six hours. Once that drowsiness lifts and you feel like yourself again, you can cautiously return to normal activities—just make sure not to drive or operate heavy machinery until you’re fully alert.
While “sleeping all day” isn’t usually necessary, a long nap is both normal and helpful. Your body is recovering from both the sedation and the prep, which can be taxing. Hydrating, eating something gentle on the stomach, and resting go a long way in helping you bounce back quickly.
Listen to your body. If you feel tired, there’s no need to push through it. Most people can resume work or light activities the next day, but everyone’s recovery is slightly different. The key is to take it easy, avoid rushing, and give yourself permission to rest.
