Evaporation Happens All the Time — Here’s Why

You’ve probably noticed how a puddle of water disappears after a few hours, even when the weather isn’t hot. That’s evaporation at work — a quiet, constant process that happens at any temperature, not just when things get scorching.

Evaporation occurs at all temperatures, as long as the liquid is exposed to air. Molecules at the surface of a liquid can gain enough energy from their surroundings to break free and become vapor. This happens slowly at room temperature, which is why your morning coffee eventually goes cold and your damp towel dries on the rack.

Boiling, on the other hand, is a much more dramatic event. It only occurs at a specific temperature — the boiling point — which varies by liquid and atmospheric pressure. When water hits 100°C (212°F) at sea level, it doesn’t just evaporate — it boils, turning rapidly into vapor throughout the entire volume.

And just as liquids turn to gas when heated, the reverse can happen too. The boiling point is also the temperature at which a gas will condense back into a liquid when cooled. So whether you're watching steam rise from a kettle or dew form on grass in the morning, you're seeing opposite sides of the same physical process.

In short, evaporation is always happening, quietly and steadily, while boiling is a precise, temperature-dependent event. One is a whisper, the other a shout — but both are part of how liquids and gases constantly shift states around us.
