How Humidity Affects Evaporation

When you step out of a swimming pool on a dry, sunny day, you dry off remarkably fast. However, on a sticky, muggy afternoon, that moisture seems to linger on your skin forever. This everyday experience comes down to one key meteorological factor: humidity.

Evaporation is essentially a balancing act between liquid water and water vapor in the surrounding air. The atmosphere acts like a sponge, and it can only hold a certain amount of moisture at a given temperature before it becomes completely saturated. When the air is dry and relative humidity is low, there is plenty of "empty space" in the air for water molecules to escape into. This steep concentration gradient causes liquid to turn into vapor at a much faster rate.

Conversely, high humidity means the air is already crowded with water vapor and getting close to full saturation. Because the surrounding air has very little capacity to accept more moisture, the net rate of evaporation slows down dramatically. This is why sweat struggles to evaporate on humid days, robbing your body of its natural cooling mechanism and making the temperature feel much hotter than it actually is.
