At its core, a ranking is simply a way to organize a collection of items into a meaningful order. Whether you are looking at a leaderboard of your favorite video game players, a list of top-performing schools, or a chart of trending songs, the same underlying concept applies.

When we compare any two items within a structured set, a ranking establishes a clear relational rule between them. Specifically, the first item will always be evaluated as either ranked higher than, ranked lower than, or ranked equal to the second.

In mathematics, this structured approach is formally referred to as a weak order or a total preorder. This framework allows systems to handle ties easily—meaning two items can share the exact same rank—while still maintaining a consistent overall hierarchy from top to bottom.
