Understanding the Risks of Peracetic Acid Exposure
Peracetic acid, commonly used as a disinfectant in food processing, healthcare, and water treatment, is effective but far from harmless. While its antimicrobial properties make it valuable, its potential health effects demand serious caution.
Exposure, even in small amounts, can lead to significant irritation. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Inhaling air contaminated with as little as 15.6 mg of peracetic acid per cubic meter (equivalent to 5 ppm) for just three minutes can trigger immediate symptoms. Those exposed may experience stinging eyes, excessive tearing (lacrimation), and a burning sensation in the nose and throat. Prolonged or repeated exposure can worsen these effects, leading to chronic respiratory discomfort or skin damage.
Because symptoms appear so quickly at low concentrations, proper handling is non-negotiable. Workers in environments where peracetic acid is used must wear protective gear—gloves, goggles, and respirators—as standard practice. Adequate ventilation is equally crucial to prevent vapor buildup in enclosed spaces.
Interestingly, despite its potency, peracetic acid breaks down into relatively benign byproducts like acetic acid and oxygen, which makes it environmentally favorable compared to other disinfectants. However, this doesn’t reduce the immediate risks during use. Its effectiveness comes with a price: strict safety protocols are essential.
