Calling North American Toll-Free numbers from Europe

Trying to reach a company's customer support line back in the US or Canada while you are living or traveling in Europe can be a bit frustrating. Toll-free numbers like 1-800, 1-888, or 1-877 generally do not work automatically when dialed from overseas.

Fortunately, you can still connect by properly formatting the country codes. Because toll-free numbers are specific to North America (assigned country code +1), you need to route your call internationally. To do this, dial the European international exit code—which is 00 for almost every European country—followed by the country code 1, and then the full 1-800 number.

The complete dialing sequence looks like this: 00 - 1 - 800 - XXX - XXXX.

Keep in mind that while the number is toll-free for callers inside North America, your European telephone provider will charge standard international long-distance rates for the connection. To save money, it is often much cheaper to check if the company offers an alternative landline number, a digital contact option like live web chat, or a VoIP service like Skype or WhatsApp to place the call over Wi-Fi.
