Preparing a 10 ppm Standard Solution in the Lab
Preparing accurate standard solutions is a fundamental routine in analytical chemistry, whether you are calibrating laboratory equipment or performing precise chemical analysis. Parts per million (ppm) represents the concentration of a solute, where 1 ppm corresponds to 1 milligram per liter of solution. When you need a specific low concentration, the standard approach is diluting a higher-concentration stock solution using the dilution formula.
To prepare a 10 ppm solution in a 100 mL volumetric flask, you typically start with a standard stock solution of 1000 ppm. Using a calibrated pipette, accurately transfer 1 mL of the 1000 ppm stock solution into your clean 100 mL volumetric flask. Dilute the mixture by adding deionized water until the liquid level approaches the neck of the flask.
For maximum precision, carefully add the final drops of deionized water until the bottom of the meniscus aligns perfectly with the fill line on the flask neck. Stopper the flask and invert it multiple times to ensure the solution is completely homogeneous and ready for use.
