How to Make Peracetic Acid for Cleaning

Peracetic acid is a powerful disinfectant widely used in food processing, healthcare, and industrial cleaning due to its effectiveness against bacteria, viruses, and spores. While it’s commonly available commercially, some applications require on-site preparation. Creating a stable, effective solution involves combining specific ingredients in precise ratios.

The typical formulation includes 27% to 39% hydrogen peroxide and 22% to 36% acetic acid by weight. When mixed, these two react to form peracetic acid, the active germicidal agent. However, the reaction is unstable on its own—without proper control, the compound can degrade quickly or become hazardous.

To ensure stability and improve performance, the mixture includes 0.01% to 2% of a composite stabilizer, often containing chelating agents like phosphates or tinoclor compounds, which help prevent premature breakdown. A similar small percentage of surfactant is added to enhance surface penetration, allowing the solution to work more efficiently on dirty or complex surfaces.

The remainder of the formulation is water, which acts as the diluent to keep concentrations safe and manageable. Because peracetic acid is corrosive and sensitive to heat and light, storage in a cool, dark place in vented containers is essential to prevent pressure buildup.

Important note: This chemical mixture should be handled with care. Always wear protective gear—gloves, goggles, and ventilation are a must. Mixing hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid at home, especially in high concentrations, can be dangerous. Commercial blends are often safer and more reliable for routine use.

While DIY preparation is possible, it's best suited for controlled environments with proper safety measures. For most users, opting for a pre-made, stabilized product ensures effectiveness without the risks.
