The Hidden Dangers of Mixing Sulfuric Acid and Water

When working in a laboratory, basic safety rules can mean the difference between a successful experiment and a severe injury. One of the most critical rules in chemistry involves the interaction between sulfuric acid and water. While it might seem harmless to dilute an acid by simply pouring water into it, doing so creates an immediate and violent physical hazard.

The reaction between highly concentrated sulfuric acid and water is extraordinarily exothermic, meaning it releases an immense amount of heat almost instantaneously. When water is added directly to acid, the initial drops hit a dense, heavy liquid. Because water is less dense, it sits on top of the acid, where rapid heat generation causes the water to boil instantly. In a matter of seconds, temperatures can jump from room temperature (around 19°C) to well over 131°C. This sudden boiling creates violent steam pockets that cause the concentrated acid to splash, leading to severe chemical burns.

To safely dilute sulfuric acid, chemists always remember a simple rule: always add acid to water, never the reverse. By slowly pouring the concentrated acid into a larger volume of water while stirring, the heat spreads evenly throughout the water, preventing localized boiling and hazardous splattering.
