Does Water Evaporate at 100% Humidity?
It might seem like water should always evaporate, but under certain conditions, it doesn’t—and one of those is when the air hits 100% relative humidity. At this point, the air is fully saturated with water vapor, meaning it can’t hold any more moisture. When that happens, evaporation slows down significantly or stops altogether.
Here’s how it works: evaporation occurs when water molecules escape from a liquid state into the air as vapor. But if the air is already packed with moisture, there’s little room for additional molecules to transition. This balance between the liquid and the atmosphere is called equilibrium. At 100% humidity, the air is in equilibrium with the water surface—just as many water molecules are condensing back into the liquid as are evaporating from it.
However, temperature plays a crucial role. Warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air. So even if the relative humidity is 100%, warming the air slightly allows it to absorb more moisture, potentially restarting evaporation. Conversely, cooling saturated air leads to condensation—think dew forming on grass in the early morning.
This is why you’ll notice damp conditions on cool, overcast days, especially in enclosed spaces like bathrooms or greenhouses. Even with no visible airflow, the stagnant, saturated air prevents water from drying quickly. On dry, windy days, though, evaporation speeds up because moving air constantly replaces the saturated layer with drier air.
So, while 100% humidity doesn’t completely stop molecular activity, it does create a stalemate where evaporation and condensation balance each other. True evaporation requires room for vapor to expand—and at full saturation, that room simply doesn’t exist.
