How Long Should You Leave Baking Soda to Absorb Moisture?

If you're dealing with a damp carpet, lingering odors, or a spill that won’t quit, baking soda is a trusted go-to. But to get the most out of it, timing matters. For effective moisture absorption, you’ll want to let the baking soda sit for at least three hours. The longer you can leave it—ideally overnight—the better the results.

Here’s how to do it right: after blotting up excess moisture with a towel, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the affected area. Keep the space covered (you can use a plastic sheet or another dry towel) to maintain humidity and prevent the powder from drying out too quickly. This enclosed, slightly damp environment helps the baking soda pull moisture and odors from deep within the fibers.

Think of it as a slow, silent cleanup crew working while you’re busy elsewhere. That’s why doing this before bed or before heading out for the day makes perfect sense. It’s low effort and highly effective.

Once the time has passed, remove the covering and vacuum thoroughly. Make sure to use a vacuum with strong suction to lift all the powder—especially if you have pets or kids, since you don’t want residue left behind. If the area still feels damp, repeat the process the next day.

Baking soda isn’t magic, but with a little patience, it comes close. It’s cheap, non-toxic, and pulls double duty by neutralizing smells while soaking up moisture. Just remember: give it time. Three hours is the minimum, but overnight is golden.
