Did Neanderthals Pass Down Genes Linked to ADHD?

It might sound surprising, but fragments of DNA inherited from Neanderthals could be subtly shaping modern human behavior—including how our brains manage attention and focus. While ADHD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition influenced by many genetic and environmental factors, scientists have discovered that certain variants tied to increased likelihood of ADHD trace back to our ancient cousins, the Neanderthals.

When early modern humans migrated out of Africa and encountered Neanderthals in Eurasia, interbreeding occurred—leaving behind traces of Neanderthal DNA in non-African populations today. Some of these inherited genetic fragments appear to influence brain development and neurological function. One such fragment, identified in recent studies, is associated with a higher predisposition to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This doesn't mean Neanderthals "had" ADHD—diagnosing ancient hominins isn't possible—but rather that some of the genetic material they passed on may affect traits related to attention and impulse control in their modern descendants. Interestingly, these variants aren't spreading; they're actually becoming less common over time, suggesting natural selection may be weeding them out of the human gene pool.

Why? It’s possible these genetic traits were once neutral—or even beneficial in ancient environments—but are less adaptive in today’s world. For example, high impulsivity or rapid shifting of attention might have helped in hunter-gatherer settings but can be challenging in structured, modern societies.

This connection between ancient DNA and modern mental health highlights how deeply our evolutionary past still echoes in our minds. Understanding these links doesn't just shed light on ADHD—it reveals how human cognition has evolved through both loss and inheritance, shaped by millennia of migration, adaptation, and survival.
