Harvard Predates Calculus—Yes, Really
It sounds almost unbelievable, but Harvard University is older than calculus as we know it. Founded in 1636, Harvard predates the formal invention of calculus by several decades. When the college first opened its doors, the mathematical tools we now take for granted in science and engineering simply didn’t exist.
Calculus hadn’t been invented yet. Students walking the Cambridge grounds in the 17th century weren’t crunching derivatives or integrals—because calculus wouldn’t emerge until the late 1600s. It was Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz who, in 1684, published Nova Methodus pro Maximis et Minimis, a groundbreaking work that laid the foundation for differential calculus. Around the same time, Isaac Newton was developing his own version of calculus, though his work circulated later.Put into perspective: Galileo Galilei, the pioneering astronomer and physicist, died in 1642—just six years after Harvard’s founding. That means Harvard was already an institution when Galileo was still influencing science. The world of mathematics and physics was still rooted in classical methods, relying on geometry and early algebra, rather than the powerful analytical tools calculus would later provide.
So yes—Harvard was teaching theology, Latin, and philosophy before the mathematical revolution sparked by calculus even began. It’s a fascinating reminder of how rapidly knowledge has evolved. Today, Harvard offers some of the most advanced math courses in the world, but it all started long before the formulas we now associate with scientific progress were even dreamed up.
