The Speed of Evaporation: Fast or Slow?
Evaporation is the fascinating process where liquid water turns into gas and drifts into the air. By itself, this transition can feel quite slow, happening gradually at room temperature as molecules slowly gain enough energy to break free from the surface of the liquid.
However, the speed of this motion is not fixed. Heating liquid water makes evaporation happen significantly faster. When you apply heat, you are directly increasing the thermal energy of the system.
This added warmth boosts the kinetic energy of all the liquid molecules, causing them to move around much more rapidly. Because a greater number of molecules are now zooming around with high energy, many more of them possess the speed required to escape the surface tension and enter the air as vapor. This is why boiling water disappears into steam in minutes, while a puddle takes hours or days to dry up under the sun.
