Recognizing High pH in Soil: What Your Plants Are Trying to Tell You

When your garden starts showing signs of struggle—yellowing leaves, stunted growth, or odd discoloration—it might not be a lack of water or nutrients alone. Often, the real culprit lies beneath the surface: high soil pH. When soil becomes too alkaline, it hinders the availability of essential minerals like iron, manganese, and zinc, even if they’re present in the ground. This imbalance triggers a cascade of visible symptoms in plants.

One of the most telling signs is interveinal chlorosis—yellowing between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green. This often appears first on new growth, since immobile nutrients like iron can’t be easily redistributed within the plant. As the condition worsens, leaves may develop pale mottling or even blotchy, burnt-looking edges, a symptom known as marginal necrosis. In severe cases, entire leaves can bleach out or die prematurely.

These symptoms mimic specific nutrient deficiencies, which can be misleading. For example, iron deficiency causes dramatic yellowing in young leaves, while manganese or zinc shortages lead to distorted growth and spotting. But if your soil test reveals a pH above 7.5, the root issue is likely alkalinity locking up these nutrients, making them inaccessible to roots.

Thankfully, high pH can often be corrected. Incorporating organic matter like compost, using sulfur amendments, or choosing acidifying fertilizers can gradually lower pH over time. For quick fixes, chelated iron supplements can help plants recover while you work on long-term soil balance.

Keep an eye on your plants—they’re the best indicators of what’s happening underground. A simple soil test could be the key to unlocking healthier, more vibrant growth.
