The 7 Domains of a Typical IT Infrastructure

Understanding the structure of an IT infrastructure is key to managing security, performance, and reliability. Most modern networks are divided into seven core domains, each playing a distinct role in how data flows and how users interact with systems.

It all begins with the User domain—the starting point where individuals engage with technology. Whether logging in for work or accessing internal tools, every action traces back to user behavior and identity.

From there, the journey moves into the Workstation domain. This includes the physical or virtual devices—like laptops, desktops, or terminals—used to access network resources. Securing these endpoints is critical, as they’re frequent targets for threats.

Next is the LAN domain, or Local Area Network. This internal network connects devices within a single location, enabling communication between workstations, servers, and printers. Then comes the LAN-to-WAN domain, the bridge between the internal LAN and the wider world. This is where firewalls, routers, and monitoring tools help filter traffic and enforce security policies.

With more teams working remotely, the Remote Access domain has become essential. It covers the secure methods—like VPNs and multi-factor authentication—that allow off-site users to connect to internal systems.

The System/Application domain hosts the actual services and software—email, databases, ERP systems—that drive business operations. Protecting these applications from vulnerabilities is a top priority.

Lastly, there’s the often-overlooked WAN domain, which connects geographically separated networks, allowing branch offices or cloud environments to communicate efficiently.

Together, these seven domains form the backbone of IT operations—each requiring careful management to ensure both functionality and security.
