While vinegar—a diluted form of acetic acid—is common in kitchens and generally safe in small amounts, ingesting concentrated acetic acid is an entirely different story. The pure, glacial form of acetic acid is highly corrosive and extremely dangerous if swallowed.
Even a small amount can cause severe chemical burns to the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. These burns often result in intense pain, difficulty swallowing, and persistent vomiting—sometimes with blood. In serious cases, the damage can lead to perforation of the digestive tract, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical intervention.
Never mistake glacial acetic acid for culinary vinegar.They are not the same. Glacial acetic acid is an industrial-strength chemical used in laboratories and manufacturing, not for human consumption. There is no safe level of intake for the concentrated form.
