How Neanderthal DNA Might Be Shaping Your Health
It might sound like science fiction, but fragments of Neanderthal DNA live on in many of us—especially those with European or Asian ancestry. While we’re not talking about big brows or stooped postures, this ancient genetic legacy quietly influences how we experience modern life, from sun sensitivity to mental health.
One of the more surprising impacts? Allergy risk. If you're prone to sneezing at pollen or breaking out around cats, part of the blame could lie in Neanderthal genes. These same genes may also make some people more sensitive to pain, reacting more intensely to the same stimuli than others.
Sunlight sensitivity and hair color are also tied to our prehistoric cousins. Certain Neanderthal DNA variants are linked to lighter skin and hair, possibly an adaptation to lower sunlight in Eurasia, but they may also increase the risk of sun damage and hair loss over time.More recently, scientists discovered a Neanderthal gene variant linked to a higher risk of severe COVID-19—a stark example of how ancient DNA can affect modern pandemics. Other studies suggest connections to type 2 diabetes, nicotine dependence, and even fertility challenges in both men and women.
And it’s not all physical. Some variants may quietly raise the odds of depression or mood disorders, possibly due to how our brains evolved to handle stress and social cues.
Of course, having Neanderthal DNA isn’t inherently good or bad—it’s simply part of our complex genetic mosaic. While we carry echoes of an extinct species, we’re only beginning to understand how those echoes shape our health, behavior, and resilience today.
