Alcohols, like isopropyl alcohol and ethanol, are among the most commonly used disinfectants, especially in healthcare settings. They work quickly to kill a wide range of microbes, including bacteria and viruses, making them ideal for sanitizing skin and surfaces. Their fast evaporation rate and low residue make them practical for routine use.

Another powerful group is oxidizing agents, which include chlorine compounds, hydrogen peroxide, and ozone. These chemicals destroy pathogens by breaking down their cellular structures through oxidation. Because of their potency, they’re often used in hospitals, water treatment facilities, and industrial cleaning. Less commonly discussed but equally important are air disinfectants. Unlike surface cleaners, these are designed to purify the air by neutralizing airborne pathogens. Some systems use ultraviolet light (UV-C), while others rely on chemical mists or ozone generators to sanitize indoor environments. They’re increasingly used in crowded spaces like schools, offices, and public transit to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.

While these three types differ in form and function, they all share the same goal: reducing harmful microorganisms. Choosing the right disinfectant depends on the setting, the type of germs targeted, and safety considerations.
