Substances That Water Can’t Dissolve
While water is often called the "universal solvent" because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid, it’s not all-powerful. Many everyday materials resist dissolution completely, remaining unchanged no matter how long they sit in water. These substances are considered insoluble.
Take sand, for example. Made mostly of silica, sand grains remain stubbornly solid in water. Whether in a beach bucket or a science experiment, sand settles to the bottom rather than blending in. This insolubility makes it useful in construction and filtration, where stability in water is essential.
Fats and oils are another classic case. Try mixing butter or olive oil into water, and you’ll see them separate instantly. This happens because fats are nonpolar, while water is polar—meaning their molecules don’t interact in a way that allows dissolving. Instead, fats form droplets or a film on the surface, which is why greasy dishes need soap to clean properly.
Wood and most plastics also stand up to water over time. A wooden post in a lake or a plastic bottle in the ocean won’t dissolve, even after years. Their complex molecular structures—like cellulose in wood and long polymer chains in plastics—are too tightly bound for water molecules to pull apart. This durability is why these materials are so widely used, though it also contributes to environmental concerns when plastics persist in ecosystems.
Metals, too, typically don’t dissolve in water under normal conditions. A steel nail might rust when wet, but that’s a surface reaction—its core stays intact. Only strong acids or special chemical treatments can truly dissolve metals.
So while water is impressively versatile, substances like sand, fats, and plastics remind us that not everything yields to its power. Their resistance shapes everything from nature to technology—and challenges us to manage them wisely.
