Blood Type B and Longevity: Is There a Link?
Could your blood type influence how long you live? Emerging research suggests there might be more to the connection than just coincidence. One intriguing study by Shimizu and colleagues explored this idea by comparing the blood type distribution among 269 Japanese centenarians and a control group of 7,153 individuals. What they found adds a compelling piece to the puzzle: blood type B appeared significantly more frequently in the centenarian group.
In their analysis, nearly 29.4% of those who reached the age of 100 or older had blood type B, compared to just 21.9% in the general population—a statistically significant difference. While this doesn’t prove that having blood type B guarantees a longer life, it does suggest a possible association worth exploring further.
Scientists have long speculated about the role of blood types in health and disease susceptibility. For example, blood type influences inflammation markers, infection risk, and even cardiovascular health—all key factors in aging. Type B may confer subtle biological advantages, such as differences in immune response or clotting factors, that could contribute to a longer, healthier life.
Still, it’s important to remember that genetics, lifestyle, environment, and access to healthcare play far larger roles in longevity than blood type alone. Living to 100 is rarely due to a single factor. However, findings like those from Shimizu’s team invite us to look deeper into how our biological makeup might tip the odds in favor of a longer lifespan.
While blood type B might be a small piece of the longevity puzzle, the bigger picture still lies in how we live—not just what blood type we’re born with.
