What Causes a Low IQ?
A person’s intelligence quotient (IQ) is influenced by a mix of genetic, environmental, and health-related factors. While intelligence varies naturally among individuals, a significantly low IQ is often linked to underlying causes rather than just differences in learning speed or style.
One of the most recognized causes is genetic conditions. Syndromes like Down syndrome and Fragile X syndrome are known to affect cognitive development, often leading to mild or moderate intellectual disability. These conditions are present from birth and result from chromosomal abnormalities that impact brain function and development.
Other causes can arise after birth. Certain illnesses—especially those that affect the brain—can have lasting consequences. For example, infections like meningitis, as well as severe cases of measles or whooping cough, can lead to brain damage if not treated promptly. The inflammation and fever associated with these diseases may interfere with neurological development, particularly in young children whose brains are still growing.
Physical trauma also plays a role. Head injuries during early childhood, a critical period for brain development, can disrupt cognitive functions and result in long-term challenges. The severity and location of the injury often determine the extent of the impact.
Environmental factors, especially exposure to toxins, are another major concern. Children exposed to substances like lead or mercury—often through contaminated water, paint, or pollution—can suffer irreversible damage to their developing nervous systems. These toxins interfere with brain cell communication and neural growth, which may lead to learning difficulties and lower IQ scores.
While some causes are unavoidable, early intervention, proper medical care, and reducing exposure to risks can make a meaningful difference in cognitive outcomes.
