What Is the Lethal Range of Artillery?
When we talk about the destructive power of artillery, one of the most common questions is: how deadly is it, and over what area? A typical 155mm high explosive round, like the widely used M795 howitzer shell, has a kill radius of about 50 meters. This means anyone within that distance is highly likely to be killed due to the blast overpressure and high-velocity fragmentation.
But the danger doesn’t stop at 50 meters. Shrapnel from the exploding shell can travel much farther—sometimes hundreds of meters—posing a serious threat well beyond the immediate kill zone. The steel casing of the round shatters into dozens, sometimes hundreds, of sharp fragments that fly outward at supersonic speeds, making even proximity to the impact point extremely hazardous.
Artillery, especially tube artillery like howitzers, is designed for indirect fire support. This means the guns fire shells at high angles so they can hit targets over hills, behind cover, or deep behind enemy lines. Used by both infantry and armored units, these systems provide crucial firepower during combat operations, softening defenses before advances or halting enemy movements.
Modern 155mm systems, used by NATO and many other militaries, can strike targets over 20 to 30 kilometers away, depending on the charge and shell type. With precision-guided munitions now entering service, artillery is becoming not only more lethal but also more accurate.
While the 50-meter kill radius is a standard estimate, real-world effectiveness depends on terrain, shell type, and fuze settings. In practice, artillery’s psychological impact—its thunderous arrival and wide area effect—often matters as much as its physical destruction.
