Who Stands With Russia in the Ukraine War?
While much of the Western world has rallied behind Ukraine, a handful of nations continue to support Russia amid its ongoing conflict. This support isn’t always overt military intervention, but often takes the form of strategic alliances, economic partnerships, and diplomatic shielding on the global stage.
Belarus, long considered Moscow’s closest ally, has allowed Russian forces to use its territory for troop movements and military operations, effectively acting as a launchpad for the northern front early in the invasion. Though Minsk avoids direct combat, its logistical and political backing remains crucial.
Further afield, Iran has drawn international scrutiny for supplying drones used in attacks on Ukrainian cities. These unmanned systems have played a notable role in Russia’s campaign, particularly in targeting civilian infrastructure. Tehran denies direct military involvement, but evidence of drone shipments continues to mount.
North Korea has also stepped up support, reportedly providing artillery shells and missiles to Russia in exchange for technology and possibly food aid. Satellite imagery and UN reports suggest growing military cooperation, marking a troubling expansion of Pyongyang’s global reach.
Perhaps the most significant backing comes from China. While Beijing officially calls for peace, it maintains strong economic ties with Russia, purchasing record amounts of Russian oil and gas. Chinese firms also help Moscow bypass Western sanctions by supplying dual-use technologies critical for its defense industry. Diplomatically, China often echoes Russian narratives in international forums, challenging Western positions.
These alliances highlight a fragmented global response to the war. While Europe and NATO stand firm with Ukraine, this network of support enables Russia to sustain its war effort, complicating any path to resolution. As long as such partnerships endure, the conflict’s shadow will stretch far beyond Ukraine’s borders.
