What Does 25% Porosity Mean in Rock Formations?

When geologists talk about 25% porosity, they're referring to how much of a rock's volume consists of tiny spaces or pores—essentially, the empty pockets that can hold fluids like water, oil, or natural gas. Porosity is calculated as the ratio of pore space to the total (or bulk) volume of the rock, expressed either as a decimal or a percentage. So, a rock with 25% porosity means that one-quarter of its volume is made up of these small voids.

This concept is crucial in the oil and gas industry because porosity directly influences how much hydrocarbon a reservoir can store. Most underground reservoirs are found in sedimentary rocks, such as sandstones and carbonates, formed over millions of years from accumulated particles and organic material. In sandstones, porosity typically ranges between 10% and 40%, making them favorable for oil extraction. Carbonate rocks, on the other hand, usually have lower porosity, often between 5% and 25%, depending on how they’ve been altered by water flow and geological activity.
