Understanding Accounting Standard AS-17: A Guide to Segment Reporting
Accounting Standard AS-17, also known as IndAS 108, plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and clarity in financial reporting for Indian businesses. Issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), this standard specifically governs segment reporting—a practice that allows stakeholders to better understand the diverse operations of large enterprises.
As businesses grow and diversify, they often operate across multiple product lines, geographical regions, or service areas. Without proper segmentation, their financial statements can become difficult to interpret. AS-17 addresses this by requiring companies to break down their financial performance by operating segments. This helps investors, creditors, and regulators assess which parts of the business are thriving—or struggling.
Importantly, segment reporting under AS-17 is not optional for all. It becomes mandatory for commercial, industrial, and business enterprises whose annual turnover exceeds a specified threshold—currently set at ₹10 crore. This ensures that only entities of significant economic scale provide detailed segment disclosures, balancing transparency with compliance burden.
The standard outlines criteria for identifying reportable segments, typically based on factors like revenue, profit, and assets generated by each segment. It also mandates geographical segment reporting when material, providing insight into a company’s exposure to regional markets.
While IndAS 108 has largely aligned Indian standards with international practices (IFRS 8), AS-17 remains relevant for entities still following Indian GAAP. Together, they emphasize the importance of meaningful financial disclosures in an increasingly complex business environment.
In essence, AS-17 isn’t just about compliance—it’s about clarity. By revealing the inner workings of a company’s various divisions, it empowers better decision-making for everyone from investors to policymakers.
