What Is Chloroform Used For Today?

While most people associate chloroform with its outdated use as an anesthetic, this colorless, sweet-smelling liquid has found a new role in industrial applications. Today, chloroform is primarily valued as a powerful solvent—helping dissolve materials that are otherwise difficult to work with. It’s commonly used to dissolve resins, rubber, fats, oils, and alkaloids, making it useful in manufacturing processes where precision and solubility are key.

One of its main roles is in the production of other chemicals. Chloroform acts as a building block in synthesizing compounds used in pesticides and certain types of plastics. It's also employed in the creation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the material behind non-stick coatings found in cookware and industrial films. Though not directly present in the final product, its role in the chemical pathway is essential.

Additionally, chloroform is used in the paper and board industries, where it aids in processing materials during manufacturing. It’s also found in formulations for lacquers and floor polishes, thanks to its ability to evenly disperse resins and waxes. Despite these applications, handling chloroform requires caution—it’s toxic when inhaled or absorbed in large amounts, and prolonged exposure can pose health risks.

Unlike its historical role in medicine, modern chloroform use is strictly limited to controlled industrial environments. Its anesthetic days are long behind us, replaced by safer alternatives. Now, it works quietly behind the scenes—helping produce everyday materials, from adhesive tapes to protective films—without ever touching the end user.
