Do All Babies Have Blue Eyes at Birth?

You’ve probably heard the saying that all babies are born with blue eyes. While it’s a charming idea, the truth is a bit more complex—and a lot more interesting. Not every baby enters the world with blue eyes. In reality, a newborn’s eye color depends on genetics and the presence of a pigment called melanin.

Melanin is produced by special cells known as melanocytes, and it’s this same pigment that influences both skin and eye color. Babies with darker skin tones often have brown or even deep blue-gray eyes from birth, while many Caucasian infants do appear to have blue or grayish eyes early on. This is because they’re born with low levels of melanine in the iris, which can change over time as light exposure stimulates more production.

So why does the “blue eyes at birth” myth persist? It’s likely because eye color changes are more noticeable in lighter-skinned babies. A child’s true eye color may not fully emerge until they’re around 6 to 12 months old—sometimes even later. During this time, eyes can shift from blue to green, hazel, or brown as melanin levels increase.

Genetics ultimately calls the shots. The combination of genes inherited from both parents determines how much melanin a baby will produce and where it's distributed in the iris. This means eye color can sometimes be unpredictable—even if both parents have brown eyes, a baby might surprise everyone with a different shade.

While blue eyes are common in newborns of certain ethnicities, they’re far from universal. The beautiful variety of eye colors we see is just one of the many ways genetics paints a unique picture for every child.
